**20th Anniversary Celebration**

I wanted you to be one of the first to receive the announcement of the Global Summit of Women’s 20th Anniversary Celebration in Beijing, China from May 20-22, 2010. We have received so many inquiries about this global gathering of women leaders, and I thought I would send this to you ahead of the actual brochure. As you will see, the Deputy Prime Minister of Ireland and the Vice President of Vietnam along with CEOs and senior women executives from the world’s largest companies are already committed to attend. The Summit venue will be the Marriott Beijing City Wall Hotel and all the requisite forms are in the attached e-brochure.  You may also learn more and register online here:  http://www .globewomen.org/summit/Summit.htm.

The 2010 Summit theme “Women at the Forefront of Change” illustrates our cause for celebration as the Summit enters the next decade of the leadership role that women are playing in addressing the critical issues that women—and men—face worldwide. The Summit will feature women who have led best practices and policies, which are improving women’s economic status worldwide.

  more detox days
This Saturday, March 14th there will be a St. Patty's Day Pick-Me-Up that will run similar to a detox day but starting with just a general talk about what we should eat to stay health with a focus on some 'green's' (1pm). Then we will ride through a Yoga Spin class starting at 2:15pm. Afterwards, we will learn a bit about what it means to be good to our skin- what to put on it and what to stay away from- with some product testing and healthy snacks.

Also, on Sunday, April 5th, there will be a 2nd full Detox Day run in the same way as in January 11th!! (Looks like this will be a quarterly event!)
a FREE presentation at the Park Slope food Coop, followed by a workout, testing out a few products, and finishing up with a meal.
The presentation will cover some similar topics but with some more hand-on things and a bigger focus on food, physical movements, etc. The crowd should not be as large this time, and the presentation should be enjoyable even to those who came in January.
Also, the workout for April 5 might just be a full Yoga class -- feedback is welcome and final call is TBD.

If you are interested, please mail to info@global-dinner-network.com

  VisionSpring: Simple Tools. Profound Impact.
"VisionSpring was founded by Dr. Jordan Kassalow, a practicing optometrist who has dedicated his life to improving vision and economic opportunity in the developing world. Jordan's work as an eye doctor and public health expert has taken him on scores of medical missions to countries all over the developing world. During these visits, in which he and other Western doctors provided eye care and free glasses to people who otherwise had little access to vision care, Jordan experienced two profound revelations:

First, Jordan realized that a large number of the patients he treated — over 40% — simply needed a pair of non-prescription eyeglasses, the kind found in drugstores all over the US. Yet the people he met were losing their jobs and their livelihoods simply because this affordable, mass-produced product was not available in their area.

Second, he noticed that, above all, people needed jobs. Without income, they could not access critical goods and services, such as water, health care, and education. Jordan began to wonder if in fact the Western eye doctors were providing a service that could easily be provided by the community members themselves if they were given the proper tools and skills. Thus, the idea for VisionSpring was born."
To learn more about VisionSpring, please visit: www.visionpring.org.
"VisionSpring's lean business model and focus on high-impact vision products mean that all donations, however small, are greatly leveraged. VisionSpring and its partners create widescale change across the developing world." For example, $100 can provide a poor worker with the tools needed to launch their own business. Please consider making a donation today. Donations can be made securely via Google Checkout on the VisionSpring website.

BLOGS of category Networks |  written by elblock @ 21.01.2009 01:44h
Top Seven Business Tips For Women Entrepreneurs
  1) Focus on your strengths
There's an old saying - 'Do what you do best and delegate the rest.' Know what your top strengths are. Delegate or drop anything that you're not exceptionally skilled at, and focus at least 80% of your time using your key talents that bring you income.
2) Put yourself first
Your growing business needs a lot of time and attention. Many women in business put themselves third or fourth on their list of priorities. Put you and your business first and everything else will fall into place.
3) Learn to say no
I ask women who have started a business to drop anywhere from 25% to 50% of their time commitments when we start working together. Most women are too over-committed with non-business related activities. Be strategic about what you say yes to, especially in the first few years of your business. Guard your precious time as the valuable asset that it is.
4) Plan for success
Lack of planning causes more businesses to fail than anything else. Planning is very valuable because it causes you to think ahead to your vision and next steps to reach your goals. You can create a simple one page marketing plan that outlines your business objectives and how you will achieve them.
5) Ask for support
Don't try to figure it all out by yourself. Notice where you are stuck and could use some help, and ask for it. Ask colleagues or others who have been in business and could mentor you, hire a business coach, or form your own mastermind support team.
6) Delegate or drop your weaknesses
Get clear on what you don't enjoy doing or don't do very well. Either stop trying to do it, or find someone who will do it for you. A perfect example is bookkeeping. If you dislike it, give it to someone else to do, and free up your time to earn money doing what you do well.
7) Keep an eye on the bottom line
You don't need to have complex financial statements, but setting targets and tracking some key indicators every month will help you understand how you are doing. You'll know sooner what's working and what's not working so that you can make strategic adjustments.

Snapshots from a book that celebrates eight successful Indian businesswomen..

They broke away from the conventional path and dared to make their own way in a man’s world.
Celebrating their success is Karmic Divas, a book on eight Indian businesswomen — Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Kalpana Morparia, Naina Lal Kidwai, Neelam Dhawan, Ritu Kumar, Swati A Piramal, Vinita Bali and Vandana Luthra.
Prerna Kaul Mishra, the Kashmiri author of the book, says it took her one-and-a-half-years to complete the book. It was difficult to select the women.
So, she decided to focus on the mid-1950s and 1960s, an era during which it was difficult for women to attend school, when they had to settle for a limited role in the social milieu.
Her book, in the author’s words, is “an endeavour to tell the stories of eight path-breaking Indian women who joined the corporate world in an era when women were thought to be cut out for a more conventional role. They not just participated in the business world, but also excelled in their respective pursuits.
"Today, they stand as role models for thousands of Indian women who are waiting to go mainstream, both in urban and rural India.”

  some inspiration on woman leadership
Centered leadership: How talented women thrive

Interviews with 85 female leaders around the world have suggested five common themes that all executives can master to improve their leadership skills.
Although many of the themes—such as finding meaning in daily activities and building strong networks—are familiar individually, taken together they create a new model for thinking about how to develop leaders.
We have had early successes teaching this model to young leaders—men and women alike.

1st European VDI-Conference on Gender and Diversity in Engineering and Science

September 11-13, 2009 | Düsseldorf, Germany

"The idea of gender in engineering and sciences has been widely discussed outside the areas where it should be applied: research and development in industry and research institutions. Although the last few years have seen a growing acceptance of gender issues in Germany, the situation of German women engineers and scientists is in many respects worse than that of their European colleagues (number, salary differences, risk of unemployment, career perspectives).

As one of the top exporting nations with a specific focus on high technology and engineering services, Germany and German industry are at last starting to accept the diversity argument: only if the teams are made up of members of different backgrounds, ages and sexes will it be possible to have the results that satisfy customers.

The conference aims to bring the gender and diversity arguments from the gender sciences to industry and to those people who can make a change: HR managers, employers, scientists and managers in engineering; both male and female. With this aim in view, there will be presentations of best practice all over the world, results of studies showing the benefits of diversity and gender conscious management, and information on worldwide work-life balance concepts in sciences and engineering.

We expect more than 400 international participants to this event and plan to combine the input from the presentations and speeches with exhibits and many opportunities to network, both within the community and with responsible managers from European companies in engineering and sciences."

  3. Karrierekaffeeklatsch - 16.
